About the Band
They make music...
The primary goal of the Oskaloosa Band Program is to elevate every student's skills to the highest possible level. Through their involvement in the band, students develop an appreciation for music as an art form and a means of self-expression. They are taught in large and small group settings and have individual lessons once a week. Many students are well-rounded performers who go on to become members of church, university, city, adult bands, and orchestras.
And do they ever make music! The Oskaloosa Band Program is admired and respected by band programs all across the country. The competitive successes of the Marching Band, the Concert Bands, and the Jazz Bands are unparalleled in Southeast Iowa. When moving to the area, many families consider Oskaloosa as the place to live based upon our musical and educational traditions.
They rehearse...
The students work hard with rehearsals early in the morning and late at night. Each summer they stay highly involved with special camps for the Marching Band, Jazz Bands, and Color Guard. When extra rehearsals are needed for individual, small group, and entire band events, the students are there... enthusiastic and committed to the program. Families support the commitment and make adjustments in their family life to allow time for the busy schedule. Staff members are present and supportive each and every time the band rehearses and performs.
They perform, they travel...
The bands perform more than 50 times a year, traveling to state and regional events to perform on stage, on the field, in parades, and in schools. The Marching Band, Concert Band, and Jazz Bands also play in competition and community festivals. Students, parents, teachers, and countless members of the Oskaloosa community have many opportunities to witness these world-class bands in action.
And they win...
Although competition is not the primary goal of the program, a successful record helps the students stay motivated and connected to the program and each other. Trophies and ribbons carried home by the Oskaloosa Bands become a proud display of their achievements in solo, ensemble, and large group events. They are often invited to perform at local and state events... and when they do, audiences know they've heard a first-class band.
